What is organic cotton?

Organic cotton is cotton grown according to certified organic agricultural standards. These standards restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and prohibit genetically modified seeds.

The word organic refers first to how the cotton fiber is grown. It does not, on its own, define the weave, thread count, finish or final feel of a fabric. Those choices are made later, when the fiber becomes yarn and the yarn becomes cloth.

This distinction matters. It allows us to understand what we are choosing, without asking one label to tell the whole story.

What does GOTS-certified organic cotton mean?

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard, an independent standard for textiles made with certified organic fibers.

Its scope extends beyond the field. GOTS establishes requirements for the processing and manufacturing of textiles, including traceability, approved chemical inputs, environmental practices and social criteria. Compliance is verified through independent certification.

For products carrying the GOTS organic label grade, at least 95% of the fiber content must be certified organic. Missuna’s Organic bedding is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.

This means the organic claim is supported by requirements that follow the material through the textile supply chain, rather than resting on the cotton fiber alone.

Does organic cotton feel different?

Organic certification does not prescribe a particular touch. The way bedding feels depends on the quality of the fiber, the yarn, the weave, the thread count and the finishing process.

For the Organic collection, we chose a 200 thread count cotton percale. Percale has a simple, balanced weave that gives the fabric a fresh, light and gently crisp feel. It is cool when you first get into bed and becomes softer with washing and use.

Every piece is garment washed after making, giving the cotton a more relaxed surface from the beginning. The result is bedding that feels familiar, natural and ready to be lived with.

Is 200 thread count suitable for bedding?

Yes. A higher thread count does not automatically mean better bedding. The quality of the cotton and the way the fabric is woven matter just as much as the number itself.

A 200 thread count percale offers a balance between softness, breathability and durability. Its light construction allows air to move through the fabric, while the close, even weave is suited to regular use.

The result is bedding that feels fresh rather than heavy, with a natural structure that relaxes over time.

Why choose cotton percale for sleep?

Cotton is naturally breathable and absorbent. In a percale weave, it creates a light fabric that helps moisture and excess warmth move away from the body during the night.

This makes percale particularly comfortable for those who prefer a cooler, fresher bed. Its smooth surface feels clean and quiet against the skin, without the weight or sheen of denser weaves.

Does organic cotton bedding last?

Organic cotton is not automatically more durable simply because it is organic. Durability also depends on the quality of the fiber, the construction of the fabric, the finishing and the way each piece is cared for.

Percale is valued for its balanced weave and its ability to withstand regular washing. With the right care, it softens gradually while keeping its character.

Wash bedding only when needed, follow the care instructions and avoid using more detergent or heat than necessary. Small habits help preserve the fibers and extend the life of each piece.
